Im Pleased to say i recently meet up with a prominent art writer and critic here in Spain, Bill Jimenez. We discussed Art, Life and all manner of things ! PAUL CHISHOLM

We recover our traditional questionnaire with the works of Paul Chisholm, a British artist closely linked to our country, first with a four-year residency in Barcelona and current stage in Palma de Mallorca. A long journey and a striking production that spans nearly a decade and we find a strong predilection for the word as an artistic tool and communication through a variety of formats, the same language that relates to popular culture, gender, the financial crisis and the appropriation of the icon for the benefit of his speech. Fascinatingly, critical, ironic necessarily … Paul Chisholm is our artist of the week and a recommendation to watch.

The moment when you realized you wanted to be an artist:
The day I dressed in a shirt and a French palette! The photo still haunts Internet somewhere.

Artists I admire or who have had a strong influence on your work:
It’s a difficult question to answer, too many artists, but to highlightCornelia Parker for his use of alchemy to get materials and transcend history, and Felix Gonzalez -Torres by simple use of mundane materials to provide emotional depth and poetic.

Sources of inspiration:
Inspiration can come in many forms in life. Sometimes the most unexpected situation can lead to a work of art, be it a drunken talk about objects of opportunities to shop in a newspaper article. Ideas constantly collide and emerge as works of art.

The greatest joy he has given the art:
The pleasure of getting people to think and generate debate.

Things you hate the art world:
My favorite hate are all those art projects, competitions, etc., they charge you for exhibit, publish or simply looking trys. They take advantage of your desire for success. You can not sell to the world of art, all you need is to learn to respect your own ideas.

The worst fear that you may have as a creator:
my work is forgotten in the mists of time.

A philosophy of life:
Follow your dreams and believe in yourself. The power of positive thinking is contagious!

A city or country favorites:
I have lived in many parts of Europe, from Den Haag, Zurich, Barcelona and now, Palma de Mallorca. All were unique and some advantages to being an artist. In any case, I choose London despite the weather! I always feel like home. Maybe because my friends live there, but also because of their extreme diversity makes a world within a city, with so many cultures and people from different countries and all the animation under a slate gray sky.

A recommended reading:
“I am a beautiful Monster, Poetry, Prose, and Provocation” by artistFrancis Picabia . His works are amazing and have inspired many of my works, especially those that play with language and its idiosyncrasies.

A film that does not get tired of seeing:
There are so many it’s hard to choose. I would say my favorite is “The Goonies”, full of adventure, pirates, gold and youthful friendship.

A song to tell you many things:
“It’s Only Just Begun” by The Carpenters. It was the song that rang my wedding day!

An indispensable business tool:
The language, visual and verbal idiosyncrasies of words. Language plays an important part in the development of my speech. It is an ideal tool to create and to explain my creations.

Something you want to learn:
How to build and sculpt works in bronze or silicon.

A dream:
Exhibiting in a museum, maybe in the Tate Modern Turbine Project, or at least, that my works are purchased by collectors and museums serious.

Your latest project:
In this coming year I plan a series of new work using artificial flowers which are used as a funeral tribute. Create and a series of pieces based on texts that explore the human fear of death and concerns arising.

I am pleased to say my work has been accepted into the first edition of the weart festival in Barcelona. My work will be on display from the 18th -8th oct/nov @ MOB Makers of Barcelona, Artists run Gallery. The theme for this exhibition is SEX and two of my works will be on Display, ” Provocation” 2010 and a recent limited edition book called ” An archive of Homosexuality Heterosexuality, Homophobia and Heterophobia. There is still one week left to see my solo show Batlle Ground here in Palma, It will be up until the 28th of this month ! The private view was a great night ! thank you to every one who came to have a nosey, a chat and lots of cava and Gin and Tonics. I want to thank the guys at waka for giving me the opportunity to put on my first solo show here in Spain ! and a special mention to Ella Medley- Whitfield for helping me curate and hang the show ! BATTLE GROUND

September 8^th – September 28^th, 2012

Paul Chisholm’s solo show Battleground, features an array of work that focus on the duplicities of meaning embedded within the codes and gestures that characterize daily life and refers to ideas of the social versus the individual. The artist frequently makes reference to the military conflict currently taking place throughout the Middle East and inserts accents of popular culture, from the First World, in order to expose the vast contrast that exists between the lived realities of those who fight to survive versus those who live a supposedly comfortable life.

On show will be a body of new sculptures created over the last year. #pause, suggests the ephemeral object and consists of two memorial flower wreaths, made of white artificial carnations and turquoise blue ribbon that spell out the words “hate” and “less.” This piece may be read as either a one-word description or a recommendation against action. Additional accents of other plastic flowers also appear, suggesting multiple visits made to this piece of mourning.

The two primary operative words for the artist are obscure and engage, which culminate in Air Vent. This mundane architectural detail, found within the gallery’s interior, exhibits the word “Terror!” suggesting that not everything is what it appears to be. Fear and the unknown can seep deep into the human condition causing deep anxiety both in the individual and society; but should we learn not to fear the future but to embrace it?

Back to the Future Backwards, features a 39-page printout of the 1985 movie script Back to the Future, except it appears in reverse text with the glass ball of a fortune-teller resting atop the stack of paper. The uncertainty of one’s place in time continually winds throughout this show, alluding to the larger schism that ricochets within society, exposing socio-political, economical and racial differences to a fault.

In Battleground, Chisholm reframes familiar objects as extensions of the body, which has become a site and symbol of conflicting ideologies. References to movies, conspiracy theories, the occult and factual realities create a chasm between fantasy and fiction, hope and despair. This exhibition explores a world at unease with itself and its future, while allowing space for questioning one’s own beliefs and desires which culminate in a sense of grounding beneath the umbrella of chaos.

La exposición individual de Paul Chisholm, Battleground, comprende una serie de obras centradas en las duplicidades de significado contenidas en los códigos y gestos característicos de la vida cotidiana y se remite a las ideas de lo social frente a lo individual. El artista hace referencia a menudo al conflicto militar que está teniendo lugar en estos momentos en Oriente Medio e insiere acentos de la cultura popular del primer mundo para exponer el vasto contraste existente entre las realidades vividas por aquellos que luchan para sobrevivir y las de aquellos que llevan una vida supuestamente cómoda.

En la exposición habrá esculturas creadas a lo largo del último año. #pause sugiere el objeto efímero y consiste en dos coronas de flores memoriales, hechas con claveles blancos artificiales y cinta azul turquesa, con las palabras “hate” y “less”. La pieza se puede interpretar como una descripción formada por una sola palabra o bien como un consejo contrario a la acción. Hay acentos adicionales de otras flores de plástico, lo cual sugiere que se han hecho múltiples visitas al objeto de luto.

Las dos palabras principales que definen la obra del artista son obscure y engage, que culminan en Air Vent. Este detalle arquitectónico mundano, en el interior de la galería, exhibe la palabra “Terror!” y sugiere que no todo es lo que parece ser. El miedo y lo desconocido pueden filtrarse muy adentro de la condición humana y crear ansiedad profunda tanto en el individuo como en la sociedad; pero ¿deberíamos aprender a aceptar el futuro en lugar de temerlo?

Back to the Future Backwards presenta 39 páginas impresas del guión de la película de 1985 Back to the Future, pero con el texto al revés y una bola de cristal de adivino encima de los papeles. La incertidumbre del lugar de uno mismo en el tiempo envuelve toda la exposición, aludiendo a la escisión que rebota dentro de la sociedad y exponiendo, incluso en exceso, diferencias sociopolíticas, económicas y raciales.

En Battleground, Chisholm replantea objetos familiares como extensiones del cuerpo, que se ha convertido en escenario y símbolo de ideologías opuestas. Las referencias a películas, teorías conspirativas, lo oculto y lo fáctico crean un abismo entre fantasía y ficción, esperanza y desesperación. Esta exposición explora un mundo incómodo con si mismo y con el futuro, al mismo tiempo que deja espacio para cuestionar las propias creencias y deseos que culminan en una sensación de toma de tierra bajo el paraguas del caos.

Paul Chisholm (nacido en 1983 en el Reino Unido) ha estudiado en Nottingham Trent University, Reino Unido y en Metafora Tallers’dArte, Barcelona. L’artista fa referència tot sovint al conflicte militar que s’està donant en aquests moments a l’Orient Mitjà i insereix accents de la cultura popular del primer món per tal d’exposar el vast contrast existent entre les realitats viscudes per aquells que lluiten per sobreviure i les d’aquells que tenen una vida suposadament còmoda.

A l’exposició hi haurà escultures creades al llarg de l’últim any. #pause suggereix l’objecte efímer i consisteix en dues corones de flors memorials, fetes de clavells blancs artificials i cinta blau turquesa, amb les paraules “hate” i “less”. La peça es pot interpretar com una descripció d’una sola paraula o bé com un consell contrari a l’acció. Hi ha accents addicionals d’altres flors de plàstic, el qual suggereix que s’han fet múltiples visites a l’objecte de dol.

Les dues paraules principals que defineixen l’obra de l’artista son obscure i engage, que culminen en Air Vent. Transformer partners with legendary NY based arts organization Visual AIDS, creators of the international Red Ribbon project, to present ReMixed Messages: A(I)DS, Art + Words, an exhibition of over forty text-based works by visual artists and designers whose reactions to and connections through HIV/AIDS reflect the contemporary moment’s tenor on the pandemic.

Taking place in tandem with the International AIDS Society Conference at the Washington Convention Center July 22-27, this special DC presentation of ReMixed Messages curated by John Chaich for Visual AIDS and originally presented in NYC asMixed Message (June/July 2011), will be hosted by Fathom Creative/Gallery. ReMixed Messages will feature painting, prints, sculpture, and installation, juxtaposes public messages with deeply personal revelations, which are at once polemic and poetic, positive and negative, both in tone and form.

The fair independent visual artists Flesh Art Fair, arises in Mallorca in July 2012 with the aim of providing a new open space and dynamic dissemination of contemporary art and meeting artists, collectors, professionals and general public. Flesh Art Fair is set up as resource platform for the international art community, promoting the visibility of many artists through the promotion of their work and their expectations for improving positioning in the field of art.

The Hotel Palau Sa Font , s historic building. XVI located in the old town of Palma de Mallorca, will host from 27 to 29 July the first edition of Flesh Art Fair. In its 20 rooms exhibit many visual artists projects that provide a sample of the latest art, and the possibility of acquiring their works directly, without intermediaries. The traditional linking of Mallorca with contemporary art and artistic and cultural diversity make this Mediterranean island an ideal setting to host successful Flesh Art Fair.
